Our Approach

We’re Chelsea Kanstrup and Bryan Smith! We met in 2007 and got married in 2015. Chelsea started Paper Heart in 2011 after the a few years working for a video company, and Bryan has been working with her part time ever since, joining on as a full time partner in 2019. We both grew up in Victoria and we love playing games (especially Ticket to Ride), snuggling with our fluffy cat Lou, travelling, and making films! In his spare time, Bryan plays soccer and runs a consulting company for cultural organizations, Accession, and Chelsea plays in the band Fox Glove.

We love working with small businesses and non-profits for so many reasons. We both spent many years working in fundraising and communications for small organizations and non-profits ourselves before transitioning to become full-time filmmakers, so we're able to draw on that experience when working with our clients. But, what we love most of all is helping you find, shape, and tell your story. We're lucky to live in an incredibly supportive community - once people know who you are and why you do what you do, they want to support you and share your message. Video's a great way to reach your clients, and our story-based approach helps keep our services affordable.

What does the process look like?

Step 1 :

The Meeting

We'll start the process off with a brainstorming session where we'll work with you to outline the goals of your video, the audience you'll be reaching, the platforms and channels you'll be using, and the format of the video.

Step 2 :

The Storyboard

We'll work together to plan out your video scene by scene. What questions are you answering? What topics are being covered and in what order? We may sketch this on paper - we promise, we're better videographers than we are illustrators.

Step 3 :

The Interview

The majority of our videos are interview-based. We take a conversational, rather than a scripted, approach so that you look and feel natural on camera. We'll film a multi-angle interview that will form the base of our video. Wondering what that looks like? Check out our recent video for Country Chic Paint.

Step 4 :

The Filming

There are a lot of steps before we actually bring the cameras out to the b-roll we need to support your story, and there's a good reason for that: spending time storyboarding, planning, and creating a video base with our interview content means that we can be efficient with our filming - we'll capture what we need to tell your story and keep the project on budget.

Step 5 :

The Editing

We'll work to edit together a film based on the goals we identified together and the storyboard we developed. Once we have a draft together, we'll incorporate your revisions or notes and then we'll put together a final version of the film. Hurray! We did a thing!

Step 6 :

The Launch

It's time to send your video out into the world. Depending on what you need, we can work with you to put together a video launch strategy and plan that will help you tailor the roll-out of your video to your audiences and channels. Now that your video's online and out in the world, we should probably have some champagne to celebrate, shouldn't we?

Yeah. We should.

Where do we go from here?
